Difficult Surprises of Obstestric Fistula Treatment

Undergoing a fistula reconstructive surgery and healing are two different things. I realised one surgery doesn’t always guarantee healing. When I was newly admitted to the hospital one woman cried bitterly during the ward round when she was told to go home and come back after two months for another surgery. This was her second surgery and the leaking urine had not stopped. She painfully asked me how she would go back home after two months of hospitalization and still leaking urine yet people knew she came for treatment? She struggled to go back home to be a burden to his brother since she was separated from her husband after she lost her baby and developed a fistula. She also closed her business due to fistula. It was better for her to stay in the hospital where she is assured of three meals and two snacks a day, diapers and she doesn’t need to strain herself or bother people to take care of her.  Most women who undergo surgery to deal with leaking urine stay with one, ...

SUPERNATURAL CHILDBIRTH

IS CAESAREAN SECTION( CS) A SUPERNATURAL CHILDBIRTH?

In my last blog, I had promised to give a few suggestions on how to keep our marriage vows for better for worse, I hope to do this next week Thursday on our wedding anniversary . Before then we can look at another aspect of, for better for worse which is childbirth. This is a sensitive area that tests our marriage vows.

Many of us get in marriage hoping to get children, if not us at least our relatives and friends. A few months into the marriage, we will sense that expectation from our African community. As we wait on we come to attest to the fact the entire conception, pregnancy, labour, and childbirth process takes the hand of God to finally be able to hold a baby.

When the baby finally comes we praise God and want to share the good news with family and friends. The first question is likely to be, “is it a boy or girl?” If by any chance you had another baby of the same sex you may hear encouraging comments like, “don’t worry next time you will get a boy/girl or it is okay girls /boys are good” just to encourage you in case you are suffering from gender disappointment. That’s a story for another day.

Those who are more inquisitive may ask was it a normal (vaginal) delivery or a cesarean section (CS) or “operation” then one may go ahead to ask the reason that prompted the CS. Maybe the baby was big, had a nuchal cord, OPP(occiput posterior position.), placenta Previa, fetal distress, a previous scar, breech presentation,   multiple babies among many other factors.

Sometimes from the discussion, you may get to hear of people who had the same situation that made you go to the CS but managed a normal birth. If yours was CS this may send you thinking why you did not manage a normal birth since everything happened very fast especially if it was an emergency.

For a conservative Christian who believes in the Hebrew birth like that of the Israelite women when they were in Egypt, you may begin to ask yourself a few questions. It can even send one to postnatal depression if not well handled. This disappointment is not necessarily because one is not grateful for the gift of the life of both you and/or the new-born baby but one is just trying to understand the entire labour and delivery process.

Moreover, the general healing process of CS which is a major surgery takes longer and is more painful than normal delivery that does not complicate thereafter. It is also more costly. Those who have experienced both normal and CS can attest to that. For instance, simple things like eating, laughing, coughing, bending, toileting, bathing, sitting, sleeping takes a longer time to normalize if you’ve gone through CS.

This was my experience in August. I really trusted God for a Hebrew birth (short and easy normal labour and delivery) especially after reading the book “Supernatural Childbirth: Experiencing the promise of God Concerning Conception and Delivery” by Jackie Mize, a very inspiring book. In fact, I got to the hospital not in so much pain but at 8 cm and I knew my prayer for a Hebrew birth had been answered!

In a while, it turned out that God had a different supernatural plan for me, I went through an emergency CS and I was very grateful to God for our lives when I came to understand the circumstances that surrounded the birth of the baby. Funnily, this kind of disturbed me afterward for a few days but my heart found rest and peace in God when I realized that CS too is supernatural childbirth. To come out of theatre alive and to heal thereafter!

To the wonderful ladies out there CS too is supernatural childbirth , when you see the scar it reminds you of God's faithfulness!
